Postpartum Depression Affects 1 in 5 Moms
The onset of depression after childbirth occurs in 1 in 5 new moms and 1 in 10 dads. The huge life changes, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, and lack of supportive societal structures contribute to a feeling of being overwhelmed and exhausted. Women living in poverty are even more likely to struggle after becoming moms, with up to 50% suffering from a maternal mental health disorder. Because the rates of anxiety and depression among young people are higher than they have been in the past, it is likely that the number of young moms affected by postpartum depression will continue to increase. For those already suffering from depression and anxiety, adding a child to the mix can exacerbate symptoms.
Postpartum depression is not merely a temporary case of the blues. Suicide rates among new moms have nearly tripled in the past decade. And, of women who are struggling with postpartum depression, only about 15% are receiving treatment. There are many reasons that moms may not reach out for help, but feeling stretched for time and not having the finances to access expensive therapies are two leading reasons.
The Momsanity Solution
Delivered conveniently through a proprietary app, Momsanity offers moms a personalized 14-week self-help program to work through the challenges of postpartum depression. The program addresses both physical and mental health, aiming to holistically boost moms’ well-being. Moms can work through the program at their own pace and from the comfort of their home, significantly decreasing barriers to accessing care.
The Council for Women in Business of Bulgaria recognized Momsanity as an inspiring initiative in development.
